Educating physicians.
Members of this group believed that the cornerstone of education should be to ensure knowledge of both the process of evaluation for ALS, and the criteria for establishing the diagnosis. The group thought it potentially helpful to disseminate this information to non-neurologists and neurologists who do not necessarily specialize in neuromuscular disorders or ALS. Recognizing that misdiagnosis occurs in ALS and that the diagnosis has profound implications for the life of the patient, the group believed that physicians should be educated on the importance of an early second opinion. Also emphasized by this group was the importance of educating physicians to refer patients to centers where clinical trials are ongoing to allow patients to participate in state-of-the-art therapeutics.
The group then turned to educating physicians about the care of the ALS patient. There was agreement that the essential message should stress the major relief of symptoms …
