John B. Penney, Jr., MD (1947–1999)
On a snowy evening in late January, I sat in a restaurant with Jack Penney and his daughter, Ellen, and we considered the passage of time. It was hard to believe that I had known Jack and his wife, Anne Young, for 20 years. Jack, for his part, marveled at the fact that he had already shared more than half of his life with Anne. Three days later, on January 31, 1999, at the age of 51, Jack Penney died of a myocardial infarction at his home in Boston.
Jack was a New Englander, born in Winthrop, MA, on December 10, 1947. After graduating from Dartmouth College, he entered Johns Hopkins University Medical School. It was there that he met and married Anne, a fellow medical student. This was the start of both a wonderful loving family and a formidable scientific partnership. Jessie, the older of his daughters, was born while Jack and Anne were residents in neurology at the University of California, San Francisco.
