Stroke is pricey.1 In addition to its devastating medical and social consequences it has enormous financial costs, which unfavorably impact the individual stroke survivor, their family, and society. According to the American Heart Association, estimated direct and indirect costs for stroke in 2006 will reach $58 billion.2 While knowledge of the huge and increasing economic burden of stroke is not new, further delineation of the sociodemographic implications of the problem could help health policy decision-makers prioritize resources and implement comprehensive steps of action to mitigate the rising financial tide due to stroke.
The article by Brown et al. in this issue of Neurology explores the impact of racial and ethnic disparities on future economic consequences attributable to stroke.3 Utilizing United States census estimates of race-ethnic populations, and extracting stroke epidemiology data from representative multiethnic stroke surveillance cohort studies, they developed a conservative model of projected direct and indirect costs …
