Abstract
Objective: to investigate the effect of Ramadan fasting on seizure control in epileptics. Background: Fasting is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam, during Ramadan, adult Muslims are required to refrain from food, beverages, or oral drugs, between dawn and sunset. This change of drug intake timing may affect seizure control. Design: One hundred epileptics were assessed one month before, after and during Ramadan. Results: 46.7[percnt] of patients had seizures during Ramadan more than that the month before and after Ramadan. Patients on polytherapy are more likely to have seizures during Ramadan (56.2[percnt] compared 20.7[percnt]). Patients who change their dosing timing were more likely to have seizures during Ramadan (69.4[percnt] compared to 44.4[percnt]). Age, gender and type of seizure had no effect on seizure control. Conclusion: Ramadan fasting affect seizures control in epileptics specially those on polytherapy and those who have to change their dose timing.
