Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the CNS, characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and the formation of demyelinated plaques, as well as gliosis and axonal loss, all to a highly variable degree. While relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) is mainly characterized by focal inflammation, the defining pathologic features of the progressive stage are compartmentalized inflammation and neurodegeneration.1
