Warrior et al. from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Emerging Leaders Program published a Contemporary Issues article describing how the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health care disparities, the importance of inclusion within the field of neurology, and a call to action for individual neurologists, health care organizations, and the AAN.
Another recent article by Minen et al. explores gender disparities in neurologic research. The authors are women recipients of NIH mentored career awards (K awards) in the field of headache medicine, and they provide a detailed account of many unique obstacles faced by women conducting research in neurology along with recommended solutions.
Voices: Lived experiences
Hunter R. Greer is a gay man, a medical student, and an aspiring neurologist. He vividly describes how his hard work, preparation, and enthusiasm were overshadowed by doubt and shame when he was suddenly forced to confront homophobia in the clinical setting on the first day of his neurology clerkship.
