Nicole Rosendale, MD; Nicte I. Mejia, MD, MPH; Jeffrey McClean II, MD

The Neurology® journal's Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) specialty site is an online forum that highlights content related to EDI topics; provides a welcoming, respectful, and safe environment for the neurology community to amplify their perspectives and lived experiences; and shares opportunities that advance EDI within and beyond the field of neurology.

New Research in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

The Neurology Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion specialty site highlights exciting new research published in the realm of EDI. Articles span the breadth of neurology and neuroscience. Recent articles include an assessment of the representation of women as plenary speakers at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting by Dr. Divya Singhal et al.1 One of the notable findings was that for 33 years (from 1958 to 1990), there were no women speakers in any plenary sessions.1 In the accompanying editorial, Dr. Holly Hinson and Dr. Nicole Gonzales suggest a number of interventions to combat inequity in who is invited to speak at plenary sessions, including self-nominated speakers lists based on expertise and more systematic collection of demographics in professional societies to allow for objective monitoring of speaker representation.2 As the apt title states, “To be it, you must see it.”2 Check out the “Latest Articles” section of the site for the full text of these articles and many more innovative publications on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Did You Know?

This section is updated regularly and is intended to highlight EDI facts and resources for anyone in neurology. In October, for example, this section featured facts about the start of Hispanic Heritage Month and the important of language concordant care.

Call for Submissions!

The Editors welcome and will review all submissions of short (<1,000 words) accounts of personal experiences lived within the realm of EDI. We are interested in amplifying everyone's voices—all clinicians including nurses and allied health professionals, as well as patients and caregivers, are encouraged to submit their contributions to journal{at}neurology.org stating “Voices Submission” in the subject line.
