Submit an e-Pearl
The Editorial Team of the Neurology Resident and Fellow Section invites e-Pearl submissions. E-Pearls are a brief description of an important topic or clinical finding in neurology designed to educate trainees and other providers. They should be tailored to be read and absorbed within a few minutes. E-Pearls are distributed via the AAN Resident & Fellow Synapse Page, the Resident and Fellow website, and our Facebook page. The length should be 100 words or less and include one reference if applicable.
Other suggestions:
- Do not submit a summary;
- Phrasing should not be copied word for word from sources; and
- Review the past 2 years of e-Pearl archives to ensure that you are not submitting a pearl that has previously been covered.
Submit your e-pearl for review by members of the editorial team at: neurology.msubmit.net under the "Resident Page: E-Pearl" manuscript classification and use "[ePearl] Title" as the title convention. By submitting your e-pearl, you are agreeing to transfer copyright to the AAN.
To encourage broad submissions from a diverse author pool, we ask that authors avoid submission of multiple e-Pearls. Authors who have submitted an e-Pearl are asked to refrain from multiple submissions.
For questions, please contact journal@neurology.org.
Submit a Video e-Pearl
Submissions should be original and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. You can submit your Video e-Pearl for review at neurology.msubmit.net under the “Resident Page: Video e-Pearl” manuscript classification and use “[Video e-Pearl] Title” as the title convention. Additionally, please make sure your submission meets the following specific guidelines:
- Short title which describes the finding shown in the video.
- List of up to 5 keywords relevant to the video to aid searchability.
- Brief high-quality video (e.g., 30 seconds to 2 minutes) demonstrating a common neurological examination finding. There is no maximum video length but typically videos would be <5 minutes. The smallest file size of sufficient quality is preferred.
- Please include a brief description (<100 words maximum) that encompasses the following items, where applicable, that allow for video interpretation:
- Summary of relevant patient history
- Physical examination findings
- Clinical indications/purpose for the test/description of maneuver
- Interpretation and localization of the finding/result
- Common pitfalls if notable
- Sensitivity and specificity (if applicable and available)
- May include up to 2 references but this is not required.
- Video narration, embedded captions, or transitional slides which describe the findings are encouraged. Written transcript of all audio is required for submission.
- Please record the video in a manner which maximizes patient anonymity. Blurring of faces, tattoos, or other recognizable markings is required, unless directly relatable to the key clinical finding.
- Written patient consent must be obtained for all submissions (upload with submission).
Our Teaching Video NeuroImages section prioritizes rare and novel neurological findings and/or presentations, whereas the goal of Video e-Pearls is to welcome submissions featuring common, foundational exam findings and/or maneuvers with a teaching emphasis. If you are unsure if your video is a good fit for Video e-Pearls, please reach out to the editors ahead of submission at rfsection@neurology.org.
