The minimal diagnosis criteria now include the mimics exclusion criteria and the merging of pediatric and adult criteria. By adding an exclusion criterion for mimics, the specificity of the disorder was increased. However, duration and frequency impact on the prevalence is still unknown.Design/Methods: A representative sample of the US population interviewed by phone with the SleepEVAL system (19,136 individuals 18 years and older; participation rate 83.2% according to CASRO standards). Results: Prevalence of the four criteria occurring at least one day per week ranged between 5.7 and 12.3%. When frequency is at 3 or more days by week, prevalence drops to 1.8–4.5%, with greater distress and impairment. Conclusions: Stricter criteria definition avoids the inflation of the prevalence RLS diagnosis with, as a consequence, more appropriate therapeutic indications.Disclosure: Dr. Ohayon has received personal compensation for activities with Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as a speaker.
