Immunosuppressive conditions such as HIV/AIDS, rather than potentially immunosuppressive treatments, were the main antecedents of PML. A lower mortality was observed among PML patients whose antecedent diagnosis was HIV/AIDS, the majority of whom received highly active antiretroviral therapy.
